Eckernf\u00f6rde is located at the end of the bay. With its historic town centre and the harbor the small town offers a mix of maritime flair and opportunities for strolling in owner-managed shops including a weekly market around the historic St.Nikolai church.<\/p>\n

Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, may be reached within 30 minutes by train or by car and if you want to experience the North Sea with the tides of ebb and flow in addition to the Baltic Sea on your doorstep, you drive about one hour wetward by car across Schleswig-Holstein to Husum, St. Peter-Ording or the Dutch inspired town of Friedrichstadt.<\/p>\n

Just 25 km away, at the end of the beautiful Schlei fjord, you find Schleswig and the Gottorf Castle State Museum with its extensive art collections.<\/p>\n

The nearby Kiel Canal offers a touch of the wide world with its shipping traffic running right through Schleswig-Holstein.<\/p>\n

Anyone interested in the Vikings and the medieval history of the region should not miss a visit to the Haithabu Museum and its reconstructed Viking village. It is located near Schleswig and may also be reached within 30 minutes by car from Eckernf\u00f6rde.<\/p>\n
